In the years since, I worked on both. Conversational AI in the years chatbots were still 'emerging'. WhatsApp Business inside enterprise implementations. Close enough to the work to see what holds up, what fizzles, and where the real value lands.
One channel has the power of reach: WhatsApp is opened by people on average every 40 minutes. The other has the power of productivity: AI agents take over work nobody wants to do.
Yet companies struggle with both. WhatsApp stays stuck at chatbot widgets. AI projects stall in pilots. A shame, because the work they take off the plate is where the serious value sits.
