Your WhatsApp number got blocked, here's what to do

You open WhatsApp and see a message you did not expect. That is frustrating, but it is not the end of your number. This is what you do now, and why it happened.

First, turn off every automation you have running. Then check whether WhatsApp shows a button to submit an appeal. Only press it once you have fixed the cause. Without a change in behaviour, Meta rejects the appeal. WhatsApp states that most reviews are completed within 24 hours. With a restriction, ongoing conversations continue and you can reply to incoming messages, but you cannot start new conversations yourself. With a block, you see a message that this number cannot use WhatsApp. Restrictions and blocks often arise from unofficial tools that log in via a QR code, thereby bypassing Meta. On the official WhatsApp Business Platform, automation is permitted, with menus and templates. We build that as a Meta Tech Provider. While a block remains in place, you cannot migrate that number to the Platform.

What must you do first?

Stop all automated messages immediately. Every tool that remains active now only makes things worse.

Turn off that automation and open the app. WhatsApp shows one of three situations: a temporary restriction that usually disappears on its own, a block with a button to request a review, or a block without that button. In the last case, the block is permanent and waiting serves no purpose. You will need a different number.

WhatsApp itself states that most reviews are completed within 24 hours.

Are you restricted or blocked?

There are two states, and the difference determines how much time you have.

What causes this?

Four things lead to this block. Messages to people who did not give permission. A declining quality score because recipients report or block you. Bulk sending that resembles spam. And using tools that do not work via the official platform.

The free WhatsApp Business app is built for one person with one phone. Fifty to one hundred messages per day is already enough to attract attention. That volume alone increases the risk, even if you do nothing wrong.

Market parties reported an increase in blocks for business accounts in June and July 2026. Meta itself has not confirmed this, but the pattern is recognisable.

Where can you actually automate?

WhatsApp comes in three flavours. Two are meant for personal or small business use and offer barely any room for automation. The third is the only place where you can build properly. Most problems arise because people do not know the difference.

Look at how a tool describes itself. If you cannot find WhatsApp Business Platform, API or Cloud API anywhere, it is not using the official route. It is piggybacking on your app and you are taking a risk.

  1. 1

    Standard WhatsApp

The app most people have on their phones. Intended for personal use, with no automation whatsoever.

  2. 2

    WhatsApp Business app

Free, for small businesses. You are allowed a welcome message, away message and quick replies. No menus or connections to other systems.

  3. 3

    WhatsApp Business Platform

Also called API or Cloud API. This is where you can really automate: menus, forms and connections to your own systems are all standard.

Which tools cause this?

There are four ways people automate WhatsApp without the official platform. There is a good chance you are following one of these routes yourself, without realising it.

The hallmark of a risky connection is linking your WhatsApp to a system from another party. If you do this with a QR code, that connection does not run through Meta. WhatsApp Web or Desktop on your own computer is fine. With modified apps like GB WhatsApp, the risk is that you installed the app outside the official stores.

  1. 1

    Libraries that mimic WhatsApp Web

These are open-source packages such as Baileys, whatsapp-web.js, WAHA, Evolution API and Venom. They are free and a developer can have them running within an hour. You choose them because you do not need Meta's permission to start. You recognise it because your builder used your phone to scan a QR code, connecting the system to your WhatsApp.

  2. 2

    Modified apps

GB WhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus are copied versions of the WhatsApp app. You install them from outside the App Store or Play Store. People choose them for features the real app lacks, such as hiding your online status. You recognise it because you did not get the app from the official store.

  3. 3

    Chrome extensions and bulk senders

This is sold as WhatsApp blaster or unlimited sending with one click. It runs on top of WhatsApp Web in your browser. You choose it because it is cheap and requires no technical knowledge. You recognise it because an extra button or panel appears in web.whatsapp.com that is not normally there.

  4. 4

    Connections via automation tools

n8n, Make and Zapier are the well-known names, usually combined with WAHA or a QR connector. This is the route for those who do not write code themselves but are handy. You choose it because you already automate other things there. You recognise it because you connected WhatsApp by scanning a QR code in that automation programme.

How long before such a tool is detected?

QR-tools usually last two to eight weeks, according to reports from builders. There is no fixed pattern: one developer used Baileys for eight months without issues and was hit afterwards.

User reviews of bulk senders from the Play Store show that people were blocked after fifty to sixty messages.

With a permanent block, Meta rarely approves objections. You lose the number, and with it your chat history and contact list. That is the real risk.

What must you especially not do?

Do not take a new number and attach the same tool to it. Within a few weeks you will be back where you are now.

Do not submit an appeal while your automation is still running. An appeal without changed behaviour is rejected, and then your chance of recovery drops.

How do you do it properly?

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, automation is simply allowed. Within twenty-four hours of a customer message you may reply freely. Outside that window you use an approved template. Menus and forms are standard features.

As long as a restriction or block remains on a number, you cannot register it on the Platform. First remove that, then migrate.
